As digital mediums move into the realm of artistic practice it becomes imperative that the artist once again gain mastery of not just the use but the generation of their tools. The current work being produced is becoming more technologically sophisticated, especially in light of the open source movement. However, the application of math and science remains relatively basic.
In an environment where a blurring between the lines of specialties into dynamically defined trans-disciplinary worlds is becoming more common and substantial the opportunities for mathematicians and artists to create new projects that push both fields is becoming a reality. Artists need to return to critical engagement in the creation of cultural production rather than a responsive position.
A primary step in creating a substantial collaboration between mathematics and art is for a greater understanding on behalf of the artist of the aesthetics of pure mathematics, not the visualization alone, but the performance of the math itself. A systemic critical and aesthetic relationship between math, art and science will open up new territories for art and bring new relevance to the art world.
